The Massachusetts resident in this case ran into a gas/convenience store and left his BMW 550i running and unlocked, making the theft of his vehicle quite convenient for a passing thief. Luckily, there was a LoJack® system installed when the BMW was purchased, enabling local police to make a fast, safe recovery.

On January 12th, 2014, the BMW’s owner reported the crime to the New Bedford Police Department. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the 550i, which was installed at Prime Toyota in West Roxbury, MA.

A short while later, officers from the New Bedford PD began picking up the homing signals from the stolen car on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The BMW was located at the intersection of Coffin Avenue and Front Street, where it was parked and abandoned. Officers quickly retrieved the undamaged 550i and soon returned it to its relieved owner.
