Officers receive LoJack alert while gathered for ‘Shop with a Cop’ event

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — A mother was arrested Wednesday after she drove a stolen car into the parking lot of a Walmart where more than two dozen police officers had congregated for a holiday tradition, Boynton Beach police said.Tesia Cain faces charges of grand theft auto, child neglect and possession of marijuana.Boynton Beach police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said Cain pulled into the parking lot of the Walmart on Old Boynton Road while officers were there for their annual “Shop with a Cop” event. Slater said police received a LoJack alert for the car and conducted a traffic stop.”In some of the officers’ vehicles, they are alerted by LoJack when there is a stolen vehicle within the vicinity — not an exact address, but within the area,” Slater said.

According to the police report, officers found Cain, her boyfriend, Dwayne Durham, and her three children — none of whom were wearing safety belts — inside the car. Officers also found a loaded .45-caliber handgun on Durham’s right hip and marijuana in Cain’s wallet.

Slater said Durham was arrested on a charge of armed trespassing within a conveyance.

The children were placed into the custody of their father.

“That’s irony at it’s best,” Slater said of the way police apprehended Cain. “You know, you have a parking lot full of police officers and a stolen car coming right to them, so it was perfect for us.”
