Just the other day I was on a train ride from Boston to New York on my way to a seminar. Along the way as I gazed out the window, I noticed several inactive construction sites with unmanned construction equipment and thought what an easy target for thieves those machines must be.

Probably worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, all that commercial equipment just sits there, with no one in sight, just begging to be stolen. Fortunately, smart equipment owners equip their machines with LoJack, the premier worldwide provider of tracking and recovery systems.

On October 9th, the site-foreman at a construction job discovered that a towable 2008 Lincoln Welder had been stolen from the job site. A theft report was made to the Wheat Ridge Police Department and it was their entry of the equipment’s information into the state and federal law enforcement computers which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the welder.

Just 12 minutes later, an officer with the Commerce City Police Department picked up the silent LoJack homing signals from the stolen construction equipment with the LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC) that is installed in the police patrol vehicles and aircraft.

The Commerce City officer quickly pinpointed the area of the “hit” and the East Metro Auto Theft Task Force was called in. Following the directional and audible cues from the LoJack PTC’s officers tracked the signal to the side yard of a residence. The welder was concealed beneath a tarp, in an area blocked by a fence, a house and vehicles positioned to hide it.

A suspect was identified and the welder was recovered intact with no damage or loss except for the license plate which the thief had removed from the trailer.
