TREND WATCH: Car Thieves Stealing Keys From Parking Attendants

A warning if you use “protected” parking garages or valets to park your vehicle. In this story, a Land Rover was stolen with keys from a parking garage along with a 2^nd vehicle when the parking attendant was robbed at knife point by two men. When the owner was notified of the incident she immediately reported the theft to NYPD’s 1^st precinct, located in lower Manhattan. The police entered the vehicle information into the State stolen data police computer (NYSPIN/ NCIC). This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.

Just thirty minutes after the LoJack transponder was activated, officers assigned to the Bronx Auto Larceny Unit picked up the LoJack signal in their vehicle equipped with a police tracking computer. The officers tracked the signal and located the stolen Land Rover parked on W166^th Street in the confines of the Bronx’s 44^th precinct. After two hours of surveillance with negative results, the officers secured the vehicle and notified the 1^st precinct detective in charge of the robbery investigation. The vehicle was removed to the 1^st precinct for DNA processing and later released to a very happy owner.
